elements of design – lighting

Light has the ability to influence mood, enhance color, and define the functionality of a space. Light can be natural, from the sun, or artificial, such as lamps and overhead lighting. The balance between natural and artificial light plays a significant role in how a space is perceived and used.

In interior design, light is used in three ways: ambient, task, and accent. Ambient lighting provides overall illumination for a room. Task lighting is used for specific tasks, such as reading, cooking, or studying. Accent lighting is used to highlight certain features in a room, such as artwork or architectural elements.

Lighting should be carefully planned and layered to serve various purposes throughout the day. The amount of natural light a room gets, the activities that will be performed in the space, and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve all influence the type of lighting you should choose.

Furthermore, light can affect how we perceive colors and textures in a room. Different types of light sources can cause colors to appear differently, so it’s crucial to consider lighting when choosing color schemes and finishes. -Contempo Space
